Where the Next Generation Will Continue the Legacy

There is a moment that happens on every project when the work stops being about drawings and square footage and becomes something real. For me, that moment came walking the grounds of Virginia State University.
We are helping bring a building to life on campus, and on this particular day I crossed paths with a group of prospective students touring for the first time. You could see it on their faces. The excitement, the nervousness, the quiet hope of standing on the threshold of something bigger than themselves.
I have spent my career designing spaces, but watching those students, I was reminded of why this work matters in the first place. We are not simply designing buildings. We are helping create places that will welcome them on their first day, encourage them through the hard ones, and inspire them to become the leaders they are meant to be.
There is something deeply meaningful about investing in spaces at an HBCU. It is an institution where excellence has been cultivated for generations and where the next generation will carry that legacy forward. When we design for a place like Virginia State, we are not simply answering a program of needs. We are honoring a history and making room for a future.
To every student I met that day: your future is bright, your dreams matter, and you deserve spaces that reflect your greatness.
I believe the spaces we create shape the lives we live.
